Adams County sheriff’s deputies shot a 32-year-old man holding a firearm during a search in Commerce City on April 21. The incident took place as deputies responded to a reported stabbing around 1:04 a.m. near the area of 70th Avenue and Dexter Street.
The event is significant because it involved both an alleged violent crime and an officer-involved shooting, which are subject to investigation by separate agencies.
According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, deputies established a perimeter and used a K9 unit to track the suspect after he fled before their arrival. While searching the backyard of a residence in the 6900 block of Dexter Street, deputies made announcements when the man exited holding a firearm. Deputies gave commands before two officers discharged their weapons, striking him. The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, but authorities said it remains unclear whether the individual fired his weapon. No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the original stabbing report, while the Adams County Critical Incident Response Team will review the deputy-involved shooting. Both deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure following such incidents.
Broader implications include ongoing discussions about police use of force and public safety responses to violent crimes. Investigations are expected to determine further details about both incidents.
