The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced that it will permanently close the I-25 East Frontage Road access to Weld County Road 34 in Mead. The closure is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. on Monday, January 5. According to CDOT, this measure is necessary for crews to extend the North Creek Box Culvert as part of the ongoing I-25 North Express Lanes project.
The closure is being coordinated with the Town of Mead and Weld County, who are working together on building a two-mile segment of High Plains Boulevard between Weld County Road 32 and Weld County Road 36. When this new road opens, which is projected for summer 2026, traffic that previously used the frontage road will be redirected to High Plains Boulevard. Afterward, use of the frontage road will be limited to private property and utility access only.
CDOT stated: “As shown on the map, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 36, but thru traffic will not be allowed. Similarly, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 32, but no thru traffic will be allowed.”
In late January, construction crews plan to reduce the width of certain sections of asphalt roadway along the frontage road from Mulligan Street (northeast quadrant of Colorado Highway 66 and I-25) to Colorado Highway 56. This work is intended to prepare for widening northbound lanes on I-25 and transitioning frontage road usage.
During construction activities, the frontage road south of WCR 32 will also close so crews can complete widening and drainage improvements along I-25. Detour routes and reduced speed limits will be clearly marked throughout affected areas.
CDOT advises drivers: “Please drive carefully through the work zones and reduced roadway sections.”
Maps detailing detour areas and changes in access from WCR 34 to WCR 36 as well as CO 66 to WCR 34 are available online. For current travel updates related to this project, visit https://www.codot.gov/projects/northi25.
CDOT notes that all construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change.
