The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has started a drainage improvement project on Interstate 70 near Exit 285, close to Airport Boulevard in Adams County. The work, carried out by Myers and Sons Construction, covers a one-mile section of the highway and is expected to be finished by mid-December.
The project includes cleaning out pipes and drains, upgrading existing drainage structures, installing new trench drains, and adding a channel filtration system. These upgrades are designed to improve water flow during storms and reduce the risk of flooding. Crews will also remove debris, protect inlets, and connect new concrete pipes to the current drainage network.
In addition to drainage improvements, workers will install new guardrails, signage, striping, and barriers. According to CDOT, these measures aim to “enhance driver safety by preventing hydroplaning, ice formation and improving driver visibility and in addition, extend roadway lifespan and durability by protecting the pavement from water.”
To allow for barrier installation, the I-70 off-ramp to Airport Boulevard will be closed overnight on Monday, November 3rd. A tentative closure is also scheduled for Tuesday night. Both closures will run from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., with an eastbound right lane closure on I-70 near Mile Point 284 during this period.
Motorists traveling eastbound on I-70 who need access to Airport Boulevard are advised to use Exit 283 toward Chambers Road. Drivers should turn left onto Chambers Road, continue straight before turning left onto East 32nd Avenue. From there they can reach Airport Boulevard by continuing straight; turning right leads south while turning left heads north.
A map showing the detour route as well as the project limits is available for drivers seeking more information about the construction area.
