The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on March 17 that it will start a resurfacing project along US Highway 160 from Elmore’s Corner to the Durango High Bridge, beginning March 23. The work, which is expected to be completed in November, will mainly take place at night to reduce traffic disruptions.

This project aims to improve about six miles of US 160 between the Colorado Highway 172 intersection and the Durango High Bridge just north of Walmart. Planned improvements include resurfacing the highway, updating striping, installing new delineators and guardrails, replacing road signs, and constructing pedestrian ramps and crosswalks that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act at several intersections.

“US 160 from Elmore’s Corner to High Bridge serves as a vital corridor for Durango and southwestern Colorado,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Julie Constan. “This highway is essential for everyday travel, tourism access and regional connectivity. The improvements will help to accommodate increases in traffic volumes and enhance roadway reliability.”

Construction will start with curb reconstruction at Elmore’s Corner before moving west toward Durango. The final phase includes deck repairs and resurfacing of the High Bridge. Additional work involves drainage repairs at the concrete median south of Home Depot extending to old Farmington Hill, as well as settlement repairs on exit ramps at Grandview Interchange.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado, building and maintaining interstates, U.S. highways, state highways, while also supporting aviation and transit through grants. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for CDOT according to its official website. CDOT reports that these efforts are part of its broader mission to deliver integrated transportation solutions that enhance quality of life for residents according to its official website.

The department operates within the transportation sector with a focus on maintaining highways as well as providing support for other modes such as aviation and transit as per its official website. This latest project reflects ongoing efforts by CDOT to ensure safe travel routes while addressing increased use throughout southwestern Colorado.
