The Colorado Department of Transportation will start a 14-mile resurfacing project along US Highway 40 through Milner on April 6. The work will extend from the Xcel Energy Hayden station at Mile Point 112 to about five miles west of Steamboat Springs, ending at MP 126. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-November.
The effort aims to improve driving conditions and safety in this busy commuter corridor between Craig and Steamboat Springs. In addition to paving, crews will replace guardrails, make minor improvements, enhance safety features on three bridges, and stabilize slopes—especially in the rockfall-prone Mt. Harris Canyon area.
United Companies from Grand Junction has been contracted for the $12 million project. Daytime work hours are set for Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with night paving operations expected to begin in mid-May running from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Traffic will be reduced intermittently to a single lane with alternating directions throughout construction, and temporary traffic signals will operate around the clock between Mile Points 115 and 116 in Mount Harris Canyon for slope stabilization work.
Drivers should expect lane closures guided by flaggers with delays up to ten minutes and speed limits reduced to forty miles per hour within the work zone. According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado, focusing on highway maintenance as well as support for aviation and transit.
Shoshana Lew serves as executive director of the department according to its official website. The department’s mission is “to deliver an effective multi-modal transportation system that safely transports people, goods and information while enhancing quality of life and environmental standards,” according to its official website.
The broader impact of this project reflects ongoing efforts by CDOT “to improve the quality of life for Colorado residents through integrated transportation solutions,” as described on its official website.
