The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has started overnight paving operations on a six-mile stretch of US 40 from east of Berthoud Falls through Empire to Interstate 70. The resurfacing work began in early September and is expected to continue for six weeks.
During the project, crews are removing old asphalt and laying new pavement. This effort is part of a larger plan to improve the road before winter weather and increased ski traffic. Work will take place overnight from Sunday through Thursday, with alternating single lane closures in both directions between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. There will also be intermittent 15-minute traffic holds in each direction.
Daytime closures remain in effect for other ongoing tasks, including electrical, pipe, and guardrail installation, with similar short-term traffic holds.
CDOT stated that improvements include not only resurfacing but also installing new drainage systems, cleaning inlets and culverts, and replacing guardrails, signage, and striping along this segment of US 40. In Empire specifically, two traffic signals will be replaced, crosswalks and curb ramps upgraded for safety, bulb-outs constructed, and additional drainage enhancements made.
According to CDOT: “The upgrades will divert water away from the roadway, which will greatly help to prevent potholes, erosion and other damage. The new pavement will make for a better driving surface.”
