Crews working for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Hamon Infrastructure have finished installing 3.5 miles of new concrete noise walls along Interstate 70 between Pecos Street and I-76. This marks the completion of the second phase of a project that began with replacing one mile of noise walls between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard in 2022.
The second phase started in March 2024, focusing on removing old timber noise wall structures and installing new concrete panels in both directions of I-70. The project also included updates to guardrails, concrete barriers, regrading, and landscaping improvements along sections of the interstate. Originally scheduled for completion in fall 2026, construction was finished nearly a year ahead of time.
Jessica Myklebust, Regional Transportation Director of Region 1, said, “Delivering this project phase ahead of schedule reflects the hard work and efficiency of our teams. For the communities along this I-70 corridor, these new concrete walls mean relief from noise pollution and the confidence of a more stable safety barrier. We are proud to deliver this key improvement to residents of our region.”
Although major construction is complete, final clean-up will continue through December. Crews plan to return in spring 2026 to finish landscaping efforts. CDOT does not expect any significant impact on traffic during these remaining activities.
The new concrete noise walls are expected to provide better durability and improved mitigation against traffic-related noise compared to the previous timber structures. These upgrades aim to reduce noise pollution for residents and businesses near I-70 while enhancing the visual appearance of the highway area.
