The Colorado Rapids played to a 3-2 loss against Inter Miami CF at Empower Field at Mile High on April 19, drawing a crowd of 75,824 fans—the second-largest in Major League Soccer history. The match marked the club’s 30th Anniversary and celebrated Colorado’s role as one of MLS’ original teams.
The high turnout underscored the significance of the event for both the club and its supporters. The game was highly anticipated, with months of buildup leading to a historic night for soccer in Colorado.
The Rapids began strongly, controlling possession and pace early in the match. However, Lionel Messi scored first for Miami after converting an 18th-minute penalty. Before halftime, German Berterame added another goal off a cross from Mateo Silvetti, giving Miami a two-goal lead.
Colorado responded after halftime with renewed energy. In the 58th minute, Rafael Navarro scored his sixth goal of the season following an individual run through Miami’s defense. Navarro now ranks second in MLS goals this season and leads in total goal contributions with ten over his last six appearances. Five minutes later, defender Lucas Herrington assisted Darren Yapi for Colorado’s equalizer as Yapi beat former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Dayne St. Claire.
Despite continued pressure from Colorado seeking a winning goal, Messi secured victory for Miami by curling home his second goal in the 79th minute. The final score remained 3-2 in favor of Inter Miami CF.
Saturday’s match broke Colorado’s previous all-time attendance record set in 2002 when they drew over sixty-one thousand fans. The Rapids will continue their schedule with an away game against LAFC on April 22 at BMO Stadium.
