The Colorado State Fair will introduce Sensory Day on Labor Day, September 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., aiming to create an inclusive environment for individuals with sensory sensitivities. The event is organized in partnership with the Autism Society of Colorado and Pueblo Pediatric Therapy Center.

Jennifer Korb, executive director of the Autism Society of Colorado, said, “All families want to get out and experience the world, and in Colorado, the fair environment is one of the amazing long-standing traditions. It’s so much fun, but the fair environment typically isn’t super sensory-friendly. With some minor modifications to just some really simple things, we can ensure everybody can come and have a great time.”

During Sensory Day hours, the fair will implement several changes: no flashing lights or music from rides in the family carnival area, no public address announcements, and opportunities to participate in educational activities with fewer crowds present. These measures are designed to reduce overstimulation that may be caused by sights, sounds, and smells at the fairgrounds.

Andrea Wiesenmeyer, general manager of the Colorado State Fair, stated, “We welcome individuals of all ages and abilities who may have special sensory needs to enjoy the fair in a calmer, quieter, and supportive environment. By partnering with local organizations who work with groups with specific needs, the Colorado State Fair is helping provide a community space for everyone and a Colorado for all.”

Regular gate admission applies for Sensory Day; no special tickets are required. Organizers recommend that visitors sensitive to sound consider bringing noise-cancelling headphones as an extra precaution. They also advise dressing appropriately for weather conditions by wearing hats, applying sunscreen, and staying hydrated.

A dedicated Sensory Friendly Fairgrounds Map will be available to help guests identify both stimulating areas and quieter spaces during their visit.

Tickets for gate admission as well as concerts and rodeo events can be purchased through the official ticketing website of the Colorado State Fair or by calling 1-800-514-3849.
