Federal prosecutors have charged Dhal Buk, 18, with carjacking, using a machine gun during a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a machine gun following an incident in Denver’s Montbello neighborhood.

According to the criminal complaint, on June 25, 2025, several individuals approached a man sitting in his vehicle. One of them pointed a gun at the driver and ordered him to exit. The victim complied and the group drove off in the stolen car. Buk was identified as the person who aimed the weapon and took control of the vehicle. After crashing into another car in a parking lot, Buk and others abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled.

Later that morning, police responded to reports of fully automatic gunfire detected by ShotSpotter technology at a nearby park. Officers detained a juvenile accomplice at the scene and arrested Buk after pursuing him on foot. Police recovered a modified Glock 9mm handgun equipped with an extended magazine containing live rounds. Investigators determined that the weapon had been altered to fire automatically.

“The charges contained in the indictment are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” according to officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Denver Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force is leading the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Brian Dunn is prosecuting the case.
