The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team erased a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter but lost to Providence 8-7 in overtime on April 18 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The result was significant as Denver tied a school record with its 12th shutout quarter of the season, highlighting the team’s defensive strength even as it came up short in extra time.
Sophomore Grayson Manning made 16 saves, marking his fifth game this season with a save percentage of at least 66.7%. Joe Taraboletti scored twice during Denver’s fourth-quarter rally, while Marek Tzagournis also tallied two goals, including the equalizer that sent the game into overtime. Chase Bruno contributed a goal and an assist for Denver. Brody Davis led the defense by picking up three ground balls.
In regulation, both teams traded goals through each quarter. After falling behind by three goals late in the third period, Denver mounted its comeback with Taraboletti scoring twice and Tzagournis leveling the score with just over three minutes left. Manning’s final save forced overtime after Denver’s defense held Providence scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Denver won only its seventh faceoff of the day to open overtime but failed to get off a shot before Providence scored on their next possession for the win.
Looking ahead, Denver will conclude its regular season against Marquette on Friday night at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. MT start and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and local radio.
