Moffat County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of being stolen on Highway 40, just east of Craig, on January 7, 2026. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver fled from law enforcement and tried to evade deputies before leaving the roadway and coming to a stop in a ditch west of Hayden.

Authorities stated that this same vehicle was involved in an earlier incident where it reportedly eluded officers in at least one other jurisdiction on January 6.

Eight people have been detained from the vehicle. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office noted that their investigation is still in its early stages and said updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The case is being investigated by multiple agencies, including those from Moffat County, Colorado State Patrol, Routt County, Mesa County, and Delta County.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized: “All involved individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
