Governor Jared Polis, the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, and members of the Colorado State Legislature celebrated Colorado International Friendship Day on May 12. The day was established to recognize the state’s international relationships that support Colorado’s economy, workforce, and culture.
Polis said these partnerships are important for driving innovation and creating jobs. “Colorado’s strong international partnerships strengthen our economy, communities, and culture and I am proud to proclaim today as Colorado International Friendship Day. Our global partnerships drive innovation, attract businesses, create new jobs and build on our commitment to build a Colorado for all where everyone thrives. Today was another opportunity to strengthen those bonds and our shared success,” said Governor Polis.
Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera also spoke about the importance of working with partners outside the state. “Here in Colorado, we are proud of our international relationships and committed to building upon them,” said Lt. Governor Primavera. “I’ve had the privilege of engaging with international colleagues both here at home and around the world, and I couldn’t be more proud of the partnerships we’ve built. When we work beyond our state’s borders, we expand opportunity and access and ultimately advance our vision of a Colorado for All.”
Michelle Hadwiger, Global Business Development Director at OEDIT, highlighted recent engagement efforts: “At a time when global collaboration matters more than ever, we are proud to champion subnational dialogue and partnership as a cornerstone of our economic and diplomatic engagement. This year, the Global Business Development team has already welcomed over 60 delegations. Today, Colorado is home to nine Consulates General and Foreign Missions, and 35 Honorary Consulates.”
The event included delegates from countries such as Armenia, El Salvador, Estonia, France, Denmark, Honduras, Japan, Norway, Peru Poland Sweden as well as representatives from African Chamber of Commerce India Chamber of Commerce.
Tourism remains an important part of this effort; in 2024 tourism contributed $28.5 billion to Colorado’s economy generating $1.9 billion in local state revenues while supporting over 188 thousand jobs.
