Strong winds with gusts up to 80 mph have led to the closure of several highways in Boulder County and surrounding foothill areas. The closures, which affect both directions of CO 93 from 64th Ave (Arvada) to CO 170, CO 72 from CO 7 to Ward Road, US 36 from Boulder to Lyons, and CO 128 from CO 93 to McCaslin Boulevard, are in response to unsafe driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Officials warn that additional highway closures may be necessary if wind conditions persist. Motorists are advised to check current road status on COtrip.org or through the COtrip Planner app before traveling.
In addition to road closures, the strong winds have caused some traffic signal outages. Drivers encountering intersections without working signals are reminded: “If traffic lights are experiencing a power outage, drivers must treat it as a four-way stop.”
Authorities also note that today’s weather increases the risk of rapid wildfire spread in affected areas. Proper disposal of cigarette butts and securing trailer chains is required to prevent sparks.
