The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on March 30 that a resurfacing project along Interstate 70 from near Gypsum (Mile Point 139) to Eagle (Exit 147) will begin on April 6, with completion expected in fall 2026.

The project aims to improve about eight miles of I-70 by milling old asphalt, laying new asphalt, replacing guardrails, repairing bridge decks, updating road signs and striping. The westbound off-ramp at Eagle (Exit 147) will also be widened. These improvements are designed to enhance safety and extend the life of the interstate.

“The I-70 Mountain Corridor serves as a critical gateway to the Eagle River Valley providing vital access for local communities, freight and tourism throughout Colorado’s mountain corridor,” said Jason Smith, Regional Transportation Director. “Protecting this asset with a new road surface will add approximately 10 years of life to the interstate and provide a smoother driving experience for motorists.”

New guardrails meeting updated safety standards will be installed as part of the work. The department says these upgrades are intended to help vehicles stay on the roadway if they veer off course. A dedicated resource page has been launched for travelers seeking information about this and other projects along I-70’s Mountain Corridor.

Daytime work is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday from 7 a.m. until noon; nighttime work runs Sunday night through Friday morning from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with single-lane closures, an eleven-foot width restriction, speed reduction to fifty-five miles per hour, and minimal delays anticipated.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works toward integrated transportation solutions that improve quality of life in Colorado while delivering effective multi-modal systems safely transporting people and goods across the state. The department oversees transportation infrastructure statewide—including interstates—and maintains highways while supporting aviation and transit initiatives according to its official site. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director as indicated by CDOT.
