Colorado track and field athlete Kole Mathison earned a bronze medal in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 16. Mathison finished with a time of 8:38.78 after leading for part of the race.

The result is significant as it qualifies Mathison, a junior, to compete at the NCAA West Regional in a few weeks, where he will aim for his second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance in the steeplechase.

Avery Pearson also advanced to Saturday’s women’s 800-meter final by placing second in the preliminaries with a time of 2:01.79. Pearson is scheduled to compete for the conference title on Saturday evening.

Competition continues Saturday with Lucas Williams participating in the men’s discus and Pearson opening running events for Colorado in the women’s 800-meter final. More information about schedules and results can be found at CUBuffs.com, and fans are encouraged to follow updates on Instagram and Twitter @CUBuffsTrack.

Mathison’s performance highlights Colorado’s ongoing presence at major collegiate track events as athletes prepare for further national competition.
