Lane closures are scheduled for Interstate 25 between South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue in Colorado Springs to allow crews to refresh striping. The closures will take place on Tuesday night, October 7, and Wednesday night, October 8. Southbound I-25 will have a left lane closure from 9 p.m. to midnight on October 7, followed by a right lane closure from midnight to 4:30 a.m. on October 8. Northbound I-25 will see a left lane closure from 8 p.m. to midnight on October 8, and a right lane closure from midnight to 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 9.
Southbound South Academy Boulevard between I-25 and Coventry Drive is currently reduced in lanes for ongoing traffic signal and island installations. This configuration is expected to remain until October 5, with the two left turn lanes for the I-25 southbound on-ramp reduced to one while maintaining two through lanes in the area.
Beginning Monday, October 6 at 7 a.m., additional lane reductions will continue along southbound South Academy Boulevard for further installation work, lasting through October 12. During this period, there will be a left lane closure under I-25 but two through lanes will remain open; the northbound left turn lane onto the northbound I-25 on-ramp west of the southbound ramps will also be closed.
Motorists are advised that delays are likely during peak travel times and should plan accordingly by allowing extra time and merging early when approaching these work zones.
The pedestrian bridge over South Academy Boulevard near Wilshire and Welton remains closed as sidewalk replacement continues on its north side. The closure is scheduled to end Monday, October 6. Detours direct cyclists and pedestrians via Wilshire Drive or Welton Drive across Hartford Street or along the Fountain Creek Regional Trail.
East- and westbound traffic shifts continue between I-25 and Fountain Creek along South Academy Boulevard as crews work on outside lanes—a condition anticipated until November 2025. Lanes are narrowed across the southbound bridge over US Highway 85/87 for ongoing bridgework.
All schedules depend on weather conditions and may change as needed.
Improvements along South Academy Boulevard focus on widening approximately one-and-a-half miles of roadway from two lanes to three in each direction between the I-25 interchange and Milton Proby Parkway (which connects with Powers Boulevard/CO21). Additional upgrades include improved drainage systems, lighting, striping, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. El Paso County manages this project with completion expected by early 2026.
A safety assessment conducted by CDOT identified issues contributing to crashes within this corridor; current improvements aim to address these problems by reducing crash rates over the next two decades.
According to CDOT’s announcement: “CDOT conducted a safety assessment for the corridor to evaluate the magnitude and nature of safety problems and analyze the causes of crashes. These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor. Over the next 20 years, the project is estimated to result in fewer deaths, injuries and crashes on the four MAMSIP corridors.”
The Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP) covers upgrades not only for Interstate 25 but also Colorado Highway 94 and Charter Oak Ranch Road—routes essential for movement among El Paso County military installations including Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station and Schriever Space Force Base. Funding includes an $18 million BUILD grant awarded by the US Department of Transportation.
