Maira Carreau, a junior at the University of Denver, placed 10th in the women’s elite race at the Americas Triathlon Cup Gulfport on March 26. The event took place at Jones Park and Gulfport Marina.
Carreau finished with a total time of 1:01:13. She exited the water in 23rd place after swimming in 9:56, then recorded the 16th-fastest bike split with a time of 29:4 and completed the run segment as the 13th-quickest in 20:00.
Freshman Lucrezia Gowdy also competed for Denver and finished in 47th place with a time of 1:05:01, marking her first appearance at an Americas Cup event. Two future Denver student-athletes participated as well; transfer Rebecca Nolan came in just behind Gowdy in 48th (1:05:09), while incoming freshman Lucy Eggleston placed 63rd (1:07:46).
The race was won by Kelly Wetteland from Arizona, who is noted as a collegiate national champion. Gwen Jorgensen finished second and Margareta Vrablova, also from Arizona, took third place.
Athletes began with an in-water start for a one-and-one-quarter rectangular loop swim covering 750 meters through Ben Jones Yacht Harbor before transitioning to a two-lap, out-and-back bike course along the beach road for a total of 20 kilometers. The final segment was a two-lap run totaling five kilometers featuring out-and-backs near fishing piers.
This event marked the last collegiate race for Denver’s triathlon team during their spring campaign that started on Feb. 28 and March 1 at Tritonman in San Diego.
