The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 16 that it seized approximately 90 bison and a mule from the Lay Valley Bison Ranch in Moffat County following an investigation into animal neglect.
The seizure comes after a month-long effort by the sheriff’s office, along with the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection and the Colorado State Veterinary Office, to address concerns about the care and condition of animals at the ranch. Authorities said further action was necessary to protect animal welfare after remediation efforts failed.
During the operation, one mule was found suffering to such an extent that humane euthanasia was performed by sheriff’s office personnel. Two bison died during the seizure process, while two others were humanely euthanized to prevent further suffering. The remaining animals are being evaluated and cared for with help from veterinary professionals and partnering agencies.
Daniel Martin, identified as the owner of Lay Valley Bison Ranch, is expected to face multiple misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals. “These charges are allegations, and Mr. Martin is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law,” according to the sheriff’s office statement.
The sheriff’s office thanked its partners for their assistance during this investigation. No additional information is being released at this time as authorities say their inquiry remains ongoing.
