Northern Colorado lost a close contest to Portland State, 4–3, on April 18 in the final game of their softball series at Hillsboro Stadium. Both teams were competitive throughout the matchup, but the Vikings managed to hold onto their lead late in the game.
The result was significant for both programs as it determined the outcome of the weekend series. For Northern Colorado, it marked a narrow defeat despite a strong effort from players across the lineup.
Portland State took an early lead with a sacrifice bunt in the first inning. Northern Colorado responded in the third inning when KK Christie scored on a throwing error. In the fourth inning, Baylie Kakallis hit a two-run home run that brought Eva Peace home and put Northern Colorado ahead briefly at 3–2. However, Portland State quickly regained control after Abby Carsley drove in two runs with a single later that inning.
Northern Colorado finished with five hits from Christie, Ella Gonzales, Emma Harrington, Krista Francia, and Kakallis. Anna Wilming pitched five innings and allowed four runs before Grace Algrim closed out with one scoreless inning.
The Bears threatened to tie or win by putting runners on base during both the sixth and seventh innings but could not bring them home as Portland State’s defense held firm.
Looking ahead, Northern Colorado will host Nevada at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley on April 20 with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT.
