The R Street Institute released an executive newsletter on Apr. 21 in which its leadership reflected on the importance of think tanks and their evolving role in today’s political environment.

Think tanks are highlighted as key resources for policymakers, providing evidence-based solutions rooted in rigorous research and independence. The author, who has spent eight years in public policy including time at R Street, said that the mission of such organizations is especially important during times of strained civil discourse and polarization.

The newsletter notes that many policymakers and their staff are seeking credible research to help inform decisions made under pressure with limited resources. “That’s why, when R Street is able to meet that need with integrity, it matters,” the author said.

Emphasizing the institute’s commitment to independence, intellectual honesty grounded in classical liberalism, nonpartisanship, and a focus on real solutions, the letter describes how these values distinguish R Street from others. The impact of scholars’ work at both state and federal levels was cited as shaping conversations and improving policy outcomes regardless of political environment.

As the United States approaches its 250th birthday in July, historical context was offered by referencing past periods of division and uncertainty. The Battles of Lexington and Concord were mentioned as a reminder that overcoming challenges has been part of America’s story since its founding. Quoting President Gerald R. Ford from the Bicentennial Ceremony in 1976: “The American adventure is a continuing process. As one milestone is passed, another is sighted… It is right that Americans are always improving.”

Looking forward, the institute says it aims to advance credible ideas to strengthen institutions and civic society while continuing its tradition of supporting informed policymaking.
