The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 1 that safety improvements will begin along Colorado Highway 12 west of Weston starting in mid-April, with motorists advised to expect up to 15-minute delays.
The project is important as it aims to improve the safety and durability of a section of highway known for its scenic views and historical significance. According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across the state of Colorado, working to enhance quality of life through integrated solutions.
Construction will take place from Mile Point 46.7 to MP 48 and includes widening the road by sixteen feet, full-depth reclamation and reconstruction, shoulder widening by four feet, a new twelve-foot eastbound passing lane, culvert repairs, new pavement markings, and updated signage. All layers of the existing roadway will be pulverized and reused for new hot mix asphalt paving. The department said work is scheduled for completion in September.
Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson said, “The Highway of Legends is a scenic and historic route known for its views, history and outdoor experiences between Trinidad and La Veta. Construction of passing lanes will provide ample space and opportunities for vehicles to safely pass slower moving traffic.”
Traffic impacts during construction include daytime work hours from Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., one-lane alternating traffic managed by crews during the day with portable signals at night or weekends, up to fifteen-minute delays, twelve-foot width lane restrictions, and reduced speed limits within the work zone.
According to the official website, Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for the Colorado Department of Transportation. The department operates in highway maintenance as well as supporting aviation and transit initiatives across Colorado according to their official site.
