Alternating lane closures will take place on northbound South Academy Boulevard between Venetucci Boulevard and Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs on Sunday, August 24, from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Crews will conduct asphalt paving during this period. The on-ramp to northbound South Academy Boulevard from Pikes Peak State College parking lot B and the on-ramp to southbound I-25 from northbound South Academy Boulevard will be closed, with detours provided.
Overnight full closures of northbound South Academy Boulevard between I-25 and US Highway 85/87 are scheduled for Sunday, August 24; Wednesday, August 27; and Thursday, August 28, from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., due to road milling and new asphalt paving. Detour routes have been established for affected motorists.
Additional overnight full closures under I-25 will occur on Monday, August 25 and Tuesday, August 26 for paving work. Northbound traffic will be rerouted onto southbound I-25 before returning via Mesa Ridge Parkway and other local roads.
Closures are also planned between US Highway 85/87 and Milton Proby Parkway during the same dates and times for road milling operations. Motorists should follow posted detours.
On Monday, August 25 from 8 to 11 a.m., the right lane of the southbound I-25 off-ramp at South Academy Boulevard will close so crews can perform electrical work near the roadway.
Bradley Road under the South Academy Boulevard bridge will operate as one alternating lane with flaggers present from Monday, August 25 through Friday, August 29 between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., while slope paving is underway.
A shift moving east- and westbound lanes of South Academy Boulevard between I-25 and Fountain Creek toward the center remains in effect until September 2025 to allow construction crews access to outside lanes.
Construction activity will pause at noon on Friday through Monday, September 1 in observance of Labor Day weekend.
Drivers are advised that lanes across the southbound bridge over US Highway 85/87 are narrowed due to ongoing bridge work. The alignment change for the northbound I-25 off-ramp to northbound South Academy Boulevard continues with a shortened acceleration lane.
All entrance ramps have reduced merge lengths, requiring extra caution from motorists. A new on-ramp connects US Highway 85/87 onto South Academy Boulevard.
The timing of these closures may change depending on weather conditions.
The improvements along South Academy Boulevard cover approximately one-and-a-half miles from the I-25 interchange past US Highway 85/87 up to Milton Proby Parkway (which links with Powers Boulevard/CO21). This project aims to widen this section from two lanes each way to three in order to reduce congestion. Additional upgrades include improved drainage systems, lighting enhancements, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, striping updates, and bridgework. El Paso County manages this project with completion expected by early 2026.
A safety assessment conducted by CDOT found that transportation improvements were needed along this corridor due to recurring crashes caused by infrastructure deficiencies. The changes are intended as mitigation measures aimed at reducing accidents over time by improving physical features of the roadway.
CDOT’s Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP) is designed to enhance mobility along key corridors including I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road—supporting economic development while improving connections among major military installations such as Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base. Funding includes an $18 million BUILD grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (https://www.transportation.gov/BUILDgrants).
