There will be overnight lane reductions on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs between Fountain Creek and Bradley Road on Wednesday, December 17, from 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., as crews apply sealant to bridge expansion joints. If weather impacts the schedule, work will move to Thursday, December 18. Drivers are advised to expect minor delays.

Additional north- and southbound lane closures will occur from Monday, December 15 through Friday, December 19, between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while crews install signage and complete roadway, traffic signal, and lighting work. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in both directions during this period. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted speed limits and remain alert for construction activity.

The South Academy Boulevard Widening Project is focused on expanding an approximately 1.5-mile section of the road from two lanes to three lanes in each direction near the I-25 interchange through Milton E. Proby Parkway. The project also includes upgrades such as improved drainage systems, lighting enhancements, expanded shoulders, new sound walls, modified merge lanes, striping improvements, and bridgework. Completion is expected by early 2026.

According to project officials: “CDOT conducted a safety assessment for the corridor to evaluate the magnitude and nature of safety problems and analyze the causes of crashes. These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor. Over the next 20 years, the project is estimated to result in fewer deaths, injuries and crashes on the four MAMSIP corridors.”

The Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP) is managed by El Paso County with partial funding provided by an $18 million BUILD grant from the US Department of Transportation. The program aims to enhance mobility along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road—corridors critical for connecting major military installations including Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base.
