Boulder Police investigated several incidents in the University Hill neighborhood early Sunday morning, with one incident having officers encounter multiple armed suspects.
"Boulder Police are currently investigating two incidents on University Hill. One incident involved the exchange of gunfire between individuals as well as officers in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Ave," the Department tweeted on Sunday. "A short time later there was a felony menacing with a gun in the 1100 block of University Ave. At least two individuals are in custody. This is a very active investigation. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call Dispatch at 303-441-3333."
In a news release published Tuesday, the Department stated that the first incident occurred at approximately 1:27 a.m. when officers were on foot somewhere around the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue on another call when they were alerted to a gun-related disturbance nearby.
"As they rounded the corner, they encountered armed individuals who were actively shooting," the statement read. "One officer discharged his weapon during the interaction with the suspects. During the incident, one adult male was shot in the arm and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured. Other individuals ran from the area and officers are following up on several leads to find them. Further investigation shows that at least three different types of firearms were involved."
According to 9 News, many Colorado University Boulder students believe that there should have been a larger effort to notify those in the area.
"If I didn't have a bunch of friends telling me, I would have absolutely no idea," said sophomore Eddie Reynolds. "And I would like something to pop up on my phone right away. Tell me to stay inside."
"It is student safety. I think they have a right. We have a right to know if something is happening," said sophomore Ashley Warren.
"If officers weren't on foot patrol in this area, and they actively engaged the suspect, it could have been a lot worse," Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said during a Sunday morning press conference. The officer involved in the shooting has been put on paid administrative leave. The individual who was shot is hospitalized and expected to survive.
