Republican gubernatorial nominee Heidi Ganahl criticized Gov. Jared Polis' significant spending after he released the state's FY 2023 budget.

Ganahl has said that she would carry out an audit on the state budget to discover areas of waste and fraud, according to her website. She would also cut down on state spending by decreasing the size of the state government, implementing a hiring freeze in the state government and cutting slush funds.

"This budget should frighten all Colorado families who are struggling to make ends meet in the face of an impending recession," Ganahl said. "At the same time that Jared Polis acknowledged the very real economic uncertainty that our state faces, he proposed a budget that is 7% larger than last year. You never hear Polis talk about cutting spending. When will enough be enough? Did Coloradans struggling to make ends meet see a 7% increase in their budgets? More government spending makes me even more curious about what is not being spent wisely in the first place. This budget is just another election year campaign stunt. Yet another mention of prioritizing TABOR, which he tried to kill. Yet another attempt to buy votes by floating the idea of continuing temporary relief of his own fees. Yet another attempt to fix the very problems he created, like crime. Polis created Colorado’s crime wave with policies that coddle criminals, and now he’s proposing a lame financial fix that won’t come close to fixing our problem. When I win the election, I look forward to an outside audit of our state's spending and submitting my amendments to this budget that will actually cut spending and hold our government accountable for how it spends our tax dollars."

Polis issued a release responding to the budget.

“The hard work of the last four years has led to a strong economic recovery, with tens of thousands of new jobs created in the last year alone and an unemployment rate below the national average,” Polis said. “But we must continue pushing forward and address the challenges facing Coloradans. I am proud that this balanced budget proposal focuses on securing today and investing in tomorrow. This budget doubles down on the work to make our state more affordable, safer, cleaner and better prepared for a natural disaster or financial rainy day.”

On the University of Colorado Board of Regents, Ganahl looks over a budget of $5 billion and greater than 30,000 employees. She has also served as the chair of the finance committee and the audit committee. Ganahl beat Greg Lopez in the Republican primary in June and will face off against Polis in the upcoming general election, according to Ballotpedia.
