The City of Aurora names Art Acevedo as interim chief after current Interim Police Chief Daniel J. Oates.
A successful transition is expected to happen next month.
“Chief Acevedo has been a fixture in the national law enforcement community for years and has been vocal about needed and measured improvements in policing and public safety across the country," Aurora City Manager Jim Twombly said in a press release.
Acevedo, who has served on the front lines of the city of Houston said Aurora reminds him of the said city in Texas. He remarked that "Both cities are incomparably diverse and culturally rich."
“As a bilingual Cuban American born in Cuba and raised in the U.S., I am intimately familiar with the challenges facing diverse communities like Aurora, and I applaud the city’s simultaneous efforts to tackle crime and implement public safety changes to better reflect the people it serves," Acevedo said.
The Aurora Civil Service Commission, an independent five-person board responsible for the hiring of police officers, was created in 1967 by the city charter. The commission "establishes the qualifications, issues exams to candidates, and sets certification requirements people must meet while applying for entry-level police officer and firefighter positions," The Denver Gazette reported.
According to 9News, the city has not received applications since it announced on Oct. 4 that they are extending the search. Initially, 21 applications were received during the two months it was posted although two of them withdrew early in the process. The initial batch of applicants included seven applicants who were women or people of color, two were selected for semifinalist interviews.
Vanessa Wilson was removed from her position as Police Chief in April 2021 and sued the City of Aurora on Sept. 23, 2022, 9News reported.
