On August 10, 2025, emergency services in Craig, Colorado responded to a fire that started as a structure fire in the 700 block of East 13th Street. The incident began at around 1:30 PM when the Craig Regional Communications Center received initial reports. Responders from Craig Fire and Rescue, the Craig Police Department, and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office arrived quickly on scene.
The fire spread rapidly into nearby fields, becoming a wildland-urban interface fire. At approximately 2:05 PM, authorities ordered evacuations for residents in the area. In total, about 55 residences were under significant threat during the event. All evacuation and pre-evacuation orders have since been lifted.
The fire was contained to an estimated 35 acres and is now reported as fully contained. Four structures were lost in the incident: three (a residence, garage, and shed) on the property where the fire originated, and another possible garage or shed near East 12th Street and Pine Street.
Two firefighters from Craig Fire & Rescue were taken to Memorial Regional Health for evaluation due to smoke inhalation and heat-related fatigue; both have been released after treatment. No other injuries have been reported.
The response required coordination among several agencies including West Routt Fire Protection District, Hayden Police Department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management Fire resources, U.S. Forest Service Fire Resources, Memorial Regional Health EMS, Boise Helitack Crew, Craig Regional Communications Center staff, City of Craig Road and Bridge Department workers, Yampa Valley Electric Association personnel, and Atmos Energy representatives.
Specialized firefighting equipment used included a Boise Helitack Type I Helicopter; two wildland engines from Moffat County Sheriff’s Office; one Type IV engine from BLM; air attack support from U.S. Forest Service; two single-engine air tankers; as well as multiple apparatuses from local departments.
Authorities say that while suppression efforts were extensive—making it difficult to determine an exact cause—the investigation remains ongoing.
In a statement issued by local law enforcement: “The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office and Craig Police Department thank the community for its cooperation and support during the incident. This response demonstrated the strength of interagency partnerships and our shared commitment to the protection of our community.”
