The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will start a new technology project on September 29, which includes installing fiber optic cable along Colorado Highway 66 and adding traffic cameras to US Highway 36 between Lyons and Estes Park.

Dillie and Kuhn, the contractor for this project, will install fiber optic cable from I-25 to Lyons. This infrastructure will support the new traffic cameras on US 36. The installation is also expected to improve internet access for local communities, enhance CDOT’s management of traffic equipment, and strengthen communication capabilities for emergency services.

During the fiber optic installation, drivers can expect shoulder closures along the affected routes. After this phase is completed, crews will begin placing traffic cameras on US 36.

“CDOT cameras help get first responders to the scene faster since they are monitored by our Operation Centers 24 hours a day. The cameras also assist the public and our plows to understand road conditions before going out. Having the cameras along US 36 will be greatly beneficial as the canyon corridor has experienced flood, fire, strong winds and heavy snow over the years,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock.

The public can view real-time images from these traffic cameras through CDOT’s COtrip.org website or app.
