The U.S. Census Bureau released new tables and files on Apr. 15 containing detailed information from its 2025 Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections, which includes data on taxes imposed and collected by state governments and the District of Columbia.
The release provides a comprehensive overview of how states generate revenue through various types of taxation, offering insight for policymakers, researchers, and the public into fiscal trends across the country.
According to the Census Bureau, the newly available data cover five broad tax categories as well as up to 25 tax subcategories. The information is used by Congress, federal agencies, state and local governments, educational institutions, research organizations, and others to analyze tax policy and contribute to estimates for gross domestic product as well as national income and product accounts.
Those interested in further details about the survey can consult the technical documentation provided by the Census Bureau. No news release accompanied this data update; it was distributed as a tip sheet only.
The availability of this annual survey’s results is expected to support continued analysis of government revenue patterns nationwide.
