The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 3 that a surface treatment project will begin April 6 along US Highway 24 in eastern El Paso County. The work, conducted with Schmidt Construction Company, will resurface a ten-mile section of the highway from east of Peyton to Calhan, between Mile Point 332 and Mile Point 342.5. The project is scheduled for completion by late September.

The improvements are expected to benefit daily commuters as well as agricultural and freight traffic. “US 24 is a busy highway for eastern El Paso County travelers,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “The new road surface will make travel smoother for commuters, agriculture and freight traffic.”

Project activities include minor culvert work, curb and gutter replacement, construction of a passing lane east of Calhan, and widening the right-turn lane at Yoder Street to enhance safety. According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across the state of Colorado and aims to deliver an effective multi-modal transportation system that safely transports people, goods and information while enhancing quality of life and environmental standards in Colorado.

During construction, motorists should expect both nighttime (Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., May through September) and daytime (Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., April through July) working hours. Lane closures managed by flaggers or pilot cars may cause delays up to fifteen minutes; speed limits will be reduced during construction zones with lane width restrictions up to eleven feet.

According to the official website, Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for the department which builds and maintains interstates, U.S highways, state highways and administers grants for aviation and transit across Colorado.

These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts by CDOT—which operates in highway maintenance as well as supporting aviation and transit—to improve roadway safety statewide according to its official website.
