The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that a resurfacing project will begin Tuesday, April 14, along US Highway 50 in Delta County. The work will take place from three miles north of Delta at Mile Point 68.5 to the intersection of US 50 and B Road at Mile Point 77. The downtown area of the City of Delta, between Mile Points 70.90 and 72, will not be affected by this construction phase.

The project aims to improve road conditions and includes guardrail replacement, reconstruction of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps, and minor improvements on bridges over the Gunnison River. Completion is expected by mid-July.

Multiple work zones will operate simultaneously along the nine-mile stretch. Resurfacing starts at the south end of Delta, with ADA ramp removal and preparation scheduled for locations such as Wide Acres Park, the entrance to the CDOT yard, four sites on 1525 Road, two sites each on both 1560 Road and Ute Street, and at the City Market entrance. United Companies from Grand Junction has been selected as contractor for this $7.5 million effort.

Daytime work hours are set from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Traffic will be reduced intermittently to a single lane in either direction with flaggers guiding vehicles; delays may reach up to fifteen minutes per closure and speed limits through work zones will drop to forty miles per hour.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado—including building and maintaining interstates, U.S., and state highways—and supports aviation as well as transit programs statewide. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for CDOT according to its official site. The department states it seeks integrated solutions that enhance quality of life while delivering safe multi-modal transportation systems according to its official website.
