Colorado College Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Colorado College stayed within striking distance of No. 9 Bowdoin College for 30 minutes, but the Polar Bears utilized a dominant third quarter to pull away for a 23-8 victory in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore goaltender Ben Anastos made eight of his 12 saves during the first quarter to keep the Tigers in a scoreless deadlock. Junior midfielder Dylan Wells put CC on the board 8:02 into the frame, however Will Byrne scored four goals during a 5-0 run to put Bowdoin ahead to stay.
After senior attackman Anders Erickson got one back for Colorado College with 1:45 to play in the frame, Jason Lach and Patrick Fitzgerald scored 11 seconds apart to put the Polar Bears ahead 7-2.
Luca Lietti scored for the Tigers off of a feed from Sam DiMaio as time expired in the first quarter, then junior midfielder Jack Haims and Wells notched goals in a span 28 seconds to pull CC to within 7-5. Unfortunately, that proved to be as close as the Tigers would get.
The Polar Bears struck for five consecutive goals, two off the stick of Byrne, to open a seven-goal cushion before Haims scored with 2:15 remaining to make the score 12-6 after 30 minutes.
Colorado College's hopes for a comeback were dashed when Bowdoin exploded for the first six goals of the third quarter. Erickson broke up the run with two minutes remaining in the period, but the Polar Bears scored twice during the final 1:20 to open a 20-7 lead with 15 minutes to go.
Junior attackman Makay Hansen closed out the scoring with 4:46 to play off a pass from Erickson.
With two goals and two assists, Erickson finished the year with 51 points and became the 14th Tiger to record multiple 50-point seasons.
Haims also produced two goals and a pair of assists for Colorado College.
DiMaio led CC with two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. The senior defender finished the year with career highs of 45 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers, which ranks fourth on the program's single-season list. DiMaio completed his career ranked ninth with 41 caused turnovers and 14th with 105 ground balls.
Bowdoin won 23 of 34 faceoffs and built a 38-15 edge in ground balls.
The Polar Bears launched 63 total shots, compared to 38 for Colorado College.
Junior goaltender Pat Mahoney played the final 15 minutes and made three saves for the Tigers
Robert Hobbs stopped nine shots for Bowdoin before giving way to Jake Phillips with 11:58 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Polar Bears face St. Lawrence University on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Saints defeated SUNY-Cortland, 15-14, in Saturday's second game.
