Colorado Governor's Office issued the following announcement on Dec. 31.

Governor Jared Polis released a statement on the retirement of the Honorable Nathan B. Coats of the Colorado Supreme Court.

“Justice Coats dedicated two decades of his life to serving Colorado’s highest court, providing the entire state’s court system with sound judicial leadership even amid the coronavirus pandemic,” Governor Polis said. “The court’s purpose is to uphold the Colorado Constitution to ensure each and every Coloradan has access to a fair and equitable legal system. Justice Coats has taken that duty to heart, and for that we thank him for his years of service.”

Governor Polis appointed Judge Maria Encarnacion Berkenkotter to the Colorado Supreme Court to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Coats. Her appointment is effective January 1, 2021.
