Republican gubernatorial nominee Heidi Ganahl recently said that she was heartbroken to hear the news that Colorado House Minority Leader Hugh McKean died suddenly at the age of 55.
McKean died Sunday just days after his 55th birthday, Fox News reported. McKean was first elected in 2016 to represent House District 51, and in 2020 he was elected to serve as leader of the Colorado House Republican Caucus.
The Colorado House Republicans said in a tweet, "It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of House Minority Leader Hugh McKean. Hugh was fiercely passionate about serving the great state of Colorado and will be missed dearly. Funeral services are being planned and details will be made public once finalized."
McKean was reportedly not feeling well on Oct. 29, and on Oct. 30 he was found dead in his home, according to the Colorado Sun. The cause of his death was a myocardial infarction, or heart attack, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office. Those who knew McKean described him as "warm" and "caring" and praised his efforts to bridge the divide among House Republicans. McKean leaves behind two adult children.
“Hugh McKean made a great impact on our beautiful state. Jason and I are heartbroken and praying for his family and friends,” Ganahl said, according to a press release. “Hugh’s personality and smile were contagious at the capitol and he fought tirelessly for his constituents and the people of Colorado. Hugh was the definition of a statesman. Colorado will miss him greatly, as will I.”
