The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) is inviting farmers and ranchers to apply for funding aimed at enhancing energy efficiency or developing renewable energy projects on their farms. The initiative is part of the Advancing Colorado’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ACRE3) program, designed to help reduce energy costs in agricultural operations while supporting sustainable practices.
Sam Anderson, CDA’s Energy Specialist, emphasized the financial impact of energy expenses on agricultural producers: “Energy costs can be up to 30 percent of overhead costs for some farmers and ranchers.” He added that through the ACRE3 program, "producers can reduce their energy costs, or in some cases eliminate them completely," with no-cost project assessments and up to 50% cost share for projects.
Farmers interested in participating must submit online pre-applications by May 31, 2025. Program staff will verify eligibility and assist applicants in securing fair bids. Funding may cover a feasibility study or an energy efficiency audit conducted by third-party contractors at no cost to producers. These assessments provide estimates on potential savings and return on investment.
Once studies are completed, a competitive grant review process will determine further funding allocations. Grants may cover up to half of project costs. Projects not receiving grants can use their evaluations to seek alternative funding sources.
“These are valuable services for producers,” said Anderson, noting that it eases the burden of grant-writing for busy farmers while ensuring neutral evaluations.
The ACRE3 program supports a wide range of agricultural energy efficiency and renewable projects such as solar photovoltaics and hydropower systems. However, funds are restricted to existing farm operations and cannot be used for residential purposes or selling generated power.
Eligible applicants may receive up to $100,000 per two-year funding cycle. CDA plans a virtual session on April 8 at 2:00 pm for those interested in applying. Registration details are available at ag.colorado.gov/ACRE3.
Environmental stewardship remains a strategic priority for CDA as they encourage sustainable agricultural practices across Colorado's farming community.
