Governor Polis has officially declared March 1-7, 2025, as Weights and Measures Week in Colorado. This proclamation acknowledges the importance of accurate measurement systems in both commerce and consumer protection.

The historical significance of weights and measures dates back to biblical times, with the first U.S. law on the subject signed by President John Adams on March 2, 1799. Today, two key agencies in Colorado—the Department of Agriculture (CDA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE)—collaborate to ensure that all commercial weighing and measuring equipment operates correctly.

Mark Gallegos, Director of the Division of Inspection and Consumer Services at the Colorado Department of Agriculture, emphasized the government's role: “Ensuring accurate measurement systems has traditionally been a critical role of the government.” He highlighted that inspectors are responsible for testing equipment and ensuring accuracy across the state.

Mahesh Albuquerque, Director of the Division of Oil and Public Safety within CDLE, noted: "Equity and uniform standards in the marketplace help us protect Colorado consumers and businesses alike." He added that their work maintains public confidence when purchasing fuel.

Inspectors from CDLE’s Division of Oil and Public Safety ensure motorists receive what they pay for at over 50,000 retail motor fuel dispensers statewide. They also address environmental concerns by overseeing cleanups from petroleum leaks.

Meanwhile, CDA's Measurement Standards Program inspects scales used in various commercial settings. Their work ensures accuracy at locations like supermarkets and airports. The program also checks price verification and labeling requirements to keep consumers informed.

The CDA’s Metrology Laboratory plays a vital role by calibrating equipment used by inspectors from both agencies. The lab adheres to methods traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Additionally, it certifies speed detection devices for law enforcement agencies across Colorado.

To promote awareness about their work, CDA offers an outreach program inviting student groups to visit its laboratories. These visits provide insights into agricultural science through hands-on experiences.

For further inquiries regarding gas or scale accuracy issues in Colorado, consumers can contact relevant sections within CDLE or CDA using provided phone numbers or email addresses.
